Counselling and psychotherapy services are quite individualized, and therefore it's dependable upon your goals, current concerns, and how long you will attend. Remember if your treatment, and as you are the driver, you can request to stop at anytime. It's important to have an open, and ongoing dialogue with your therapist about treatment progression, goals, as well as any concerns.
Some individuals will seek out counselling for a single session, whether it's a consult for coping strategies, to feel heard and validated, to assess their options, or because of curiosity. Others experience a need to attend ongoing counselling sessions focused on a long term goal. There is evidence supporting both single session counselling and more long term based interventions depending on the presenting concern.
Unfortunately, counselling services are not covered under OHIP at this time. No referral required to access counselling services here. A receipt of payment can be provided for services provided and used for income tax purposes.
Social Workers are trained to provide counselling to individuals, couples, families, as well as to support communities through advocating for social equality, social justice, and to work towards protection of those most vulnerable in society. Counselling sessions are inclusive of individualized activities, and services. I provide an eclectic approach which often includes talk therapy, creative arts based resources, energy psychology techniques for mind body healing, as well as recommending individuals practice the skills learned in session, in between sessions to support wellness. Each counselling session is goal focused, and goals are discussed at the start of a session, and identified by the individual.
There are many benefits to each type of service, and as a social worker, I practice from the philosophy not every service will meet the needs for everyone. Groups are beneficial in the way that they are often cheaper, you can learn from peers experiencing similar concerns, and also feel less alone in your journey. Individual Based Counselling Services focus solely on your concerns during one to one sessions.
Support groups are often more informal, sometimes are facilitated by a trained professional, trained peer facilitator, or run informally by a peer. The focus of support groups is usually helping each other out, problem solving together, and reducing feelings of isolation/loneliness about a presenting challenge or concern.
Therapy focused groups are always run by a trained facilitator, and engage participants in a therapeutic process. Often these groups will include paced self-disclosure, sections on learning a specific skill or topic taught by facilitator, and sharing application of this skill to help motivate each other for change.

The first therapy session includes an assessment, a treatment plan outline and take away next steps to try until we meet again. My intentions is to be clear and concise about what this includes and what you can do to feel relief right away whenever possible. This also provides a sense of hope and direction to inform your choices for next steps of treatment. Often times eating disorder treatment does require a longer track of therapy typically between 9-18 months- remeeach case is unique.
